Give your window blinds a new direction

Have you ever wondered why the slats on window blinds turn in two different directions? There are several reasons. So you can see out and your neighbors can’t see in? Well, that is part of the reason, but another reason is so light can either be blocked out or let into your home.

How does light help you save money? Simple. In the wintertime, houses are usually cold. By turning the slats so the sunshine and warmth can come in, you will actually help heat the house. Why not take advantage of the natural sunlight and heat during the winter months.

On the reverse side, during summer time, if you live in a location where temperatures in the 100’s are normal, you want to block out as much sunlight and heat as possible. Turn those slats so they block out the sunlight.

What does it mean to let the sunshine in? Which direction are the slats on the window blinds? Here is an easy test. Close the slats on the window blinds. Take your hand and brush them in a downward motion. If they are smooth, then you have them set to let sunshine in. If your hand hits bumps or catches on the slats, that means you are blocking the light out.

The price of natural gas and electricity are continuing to rise and this is a simple, yet effective way to help you control your utility expenses. Turn those slats and either block out the heat or let the sunshine in.
